Wavelogix, an Indiana-based startup manufacturing novel concrete strength sensors, has secured $3M in Series A funding from Rhapsody Venture Partners, a Cambridge-based venture capital firm that specializes in hard-tech investments.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., May 28, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- ' patented , developed at Purdue University, is the world's first-ever, completely BREAK-FREEâ„¢, real-time, in-place concrete strength sensing solution. Once embedded, the sensors are able to measure in-place strength directly, without any information about the concrete mix. This innovation enables construction engineers to make data-driven decisions, optimizing schedules, reducing costs, and improving jobsite safety.
For over 100 years, concrete strength has been measured indirectly using small cylinder samples taken from each batch. These samples are cured in a lab, under very different conditions than a slab experiences in the field. Still, the measurements from crushing these cylinders are often the only information that contractors have to determine whether roads are strong enough to be reopened. Long cure times and inaccuracies caused by mishandling cylinders can result in expensive repairs and project delays.
REBEL, which has been sold commercially since December of 2023, is the only solution that provides real-time, accurate strength data without needing information about the concrete mix. More than half of U.S. states with interstate paving are participating in a Federal Highway Administration study to implement REBEL sensors.
Wavelogix's sensor system has already garnered national recognition. In April, Wavelogix received the 2024 , gold place for critical human infrastructure, and was on list. Fast Company magazine named this invention one of its , and the American Society of Civil Engineers' selected the technology as one of its "Gamechangers" for the year.
Dr. Luna Lu, Purdue's Reilly Professor of Civil Engineering and the inventor of the technology, said, "Rhapsody's investment in Wavelogix shows that our sensors bring immense value to the industry. Their funding will allow us to scale manufacturing and enable nationwide deployment of the technology."
Jason Whaley, General Partner at Rhapsody Venture Partners, said, "Wavelogix's solution is transformative for concrete construction. Short-term, their solution will allow accelerated project timelines and eliminate costly quality control errors. Beyond this, Wavelogix will enable data-driven decision making and optimization of concrete mix designs, which will reduce carbon footprints, eliminate waste, and lead to more durable structures."
