Tarifica's *The Future of Telecom Pricing* event showcased expert insights on mobile and broadband pricing, benchmarking, personalized prepaid offers, and 5G monetization.
NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Tarifica recently hosted The Future of Telecom Pricing, an online event that brought together senior industry experts to explore current and emerging trends in telecom pricing. Featured speakers included Kostas Masselos, President of EETT and Vice Chair of BEREC, Pau Castells, Head of Economic Analysis at GSMA, and Tarifica's own executives, Soichi Nakajima, Vice President of Data and Analysis, and Will Watts, Vice President of Product. The event highlighted a range of topics, from ultra-fast fiber broadband pricing to innovative benchmarking methods, personalized prepaid offers in emerging markets, and 5G monetization strategies.
Soichi Nakajima opened the event with an analysis of ultra-fast fiber broadband pricing, focusing on the price differentials between 1Gbps and 8Gbps (or higher) fiber speeds across 10 countries, exploring both absolute and percentage differences. "In markets like Belgium, Portugal, and the US, upgrading to speeds of 8Gbps or higher commands a significant price premium, while countries like Japan and Switzerland offer more affordable ultra-high-speed broadband options," Nakajima explained. He also highlighted that in Poland, the price difference is the steepest in percentage terms, with 8Gbps+ costing nearly double the price of 1Gbps.
The event also included a presentation by Kostas Masselos of EETT, who detailed an innovative approach to benchmarking telecom prices using Tarifica's proprietary data and algorithms. His analysis compared Greece's retail mobile and fixed telecom prices against those in five other European countries, ranking Greece mid-tier in mobile pricing when adjusted for Purchasing Price Parity (PPP).
In addition, Will Watts presented findings on personalized prepaid offers in emerging markets, highlighting the dynamic and complex nature of prepaid pricing. Over a four-month period in one market, 351 distinct offers were collected and analyzed across three different user profiles, illustrating just how varied these personalized promotions can be – underscoring the complexity of such offers even within a single country. "Our PlanDetector tool has shown that personalized SMS and USSD offers can vary dramatically depending on the user profile," he explained. "This creates a complex competitive landscape in which visibility into such offers is critical for operators and regulators."
Finally, Pau Castells of GSMA delivered an in-depth analysis of 5G monetization strategies. His presentation covered 5G adoption rates, fixed wireless access (FWA), and premium pricing models. Castells noted that consumers in certain markets are willing to pay a premium for unlimited data and maximum 5G speeds, with additional allowances for voice having a modest impact on price, while SMS allowances had minimal effect.
The Future of Telecom Pricing event underscored the importance of using data-driven strategies to navigate today's rapidly evolving telecom landscape. From broadband to 5G, understanding pricing dynamics is essential for operators aiming to stay competitive and for regulators seeking to ensure fair and transparent markets.
