Workers are being asked to return to an office they no longer live near, forcing many to relocate or seek new employment.
BELLEVUE, Wash., Feb. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- StorageUnits.com, a reliable and user-friendly platform for finding the best and most convenient storage facilities, has released new findings from a February 2025 survey examining the impact of return-to-office (RTO) policies on workers' living situations. The survey of 2,370 employees at companies enforcing RTO policies reveals that 1 in 4 workers are being asked to return to an office they no longer live near, forcing many to relocate or seek new employment.
According to the survey, 19% of remote workers have already moved back to comply with RTO mandates, while 60% plan to relocate. However, 21% of workers have no plans to move, with 40% of that group instead choosing to find a new job. Among all relocating workers, more than half (56%) attempted to secure a different job before moving, but most either did not receive offers or found the offers unattractive.
For those returning to their company's office, the financial burden is significant. More than half (51%) expect a sharp increase in their cost of living, 43% anticipate higher rent or mortgage payments, and 30% will need to downsize. Many are turning to storage solutions to manage these transitions, with 69% of relocating workers having rented or planning to rent a storage unit.
The survey also found that the top cities workers are returning to include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia—major metropolitan areas where housing costs are already high.
This survey, commissioned by StorageUnits.com and conducted online via Pollfish in January 2025, collected responses from 2,370 U.S.-based workers. To view the study write-up, please visit:
