SedMed's hydraulic toilet seat lifter has been deployed and integrated within the hospital's rehabilitation floor
WOODBRIDGE, Conn., Jan. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Montefiore Medical Center Wakefield Campus in The Bronx, New York, is known for compassionate care, medical research, and education. Its Magnet Hospital accreditation underscores its commitment to nursing excellence and a supportive staff environment.
Montefiore's Acute Rehabilitation Medicine Unit is partnering with , a Connecticut-based company specializing in durable medical equipment, for a quality improvement study. SedMed's Toilet Lift Assist, a hydraulic toilet seat lifter, is designed to reduce patient falls and ease nursing staff's physical strain during transfers.
The technology was introduced by 4th-year medical student Lindsay Kramer, who connected SedMed with supervising physicians Dr. Anne F. Ambrose and Dr. Aye Mon Win. In February 2024, SedMed conducted an on-site demonstration on the Rehabilitation Floor, where Dr. Win and Nurse Manager Lawry Ricketts oversee patient care.
Led by Jody Hamilton, RN, Chair of the Unit-Based Council on 4 East, the Council identified SedMed's benefits and integrated the device into the unit. Since April, all patient bathrooms in the Rehabilitation Unit have been equipped with the SedMed Toilet Lift Assist.
Research shows 80% of older adult falls occur in bathrooms, and 24% of healthcare worker compensation claims stem from overexertion, highlighting the need for solutions like SedMed's. The ongoing study measures its impact on reducing falls and staff injuries while enhancing operational efficiency and staff retention.
