Recent college graduates are struggling with receiving feedback and office norms
SEATTLE, Oct. 25, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Intelligent.com, a platform dedicated to helping young professionals navigate the future of work, has published a recent survey revealing that 81% of business leaders believe recent college graduates need workplace etiquette training. The survey, conducted in October 2024, gathered insights from 1,000 managers to better understand how employers are addressing professionalism issues in the workplace.
The survey found that 33% of managers say recent college graduates definitely need workplace etiquette training, while 48% say they probably do. Managers at fully in-person companies were slightly more likely to note a need for this training, with 83% identifying etiquette issues compared to 79% at hybrid companies and 76% at fully remote companies.
According to managers, recent graduates are struggling with specific areas of professionalism, including taking constructive criticism (56%), understanding cell phone etiquette (51%), and addressing conflict (48%). Other concerns include dressing professionally, exercising common sense, and keeping controversial topics out of the workplace.
"Recent grads have spent most of their lives in academic institutions that focus more on theoretical knowledge and inherently give less exposure to practical skills needed to be successful in the workplace. Leaving a structured environment with clear and constant guidance to enter the professional workplace where they are expected to be more autonomous and deal with ambiguity can be a difficult transition," says Huy Nguyen, Intelligent.com's chief education and career development advisor.
The survey also found that half of employers currently offer or plan to provide workplace etiquette training to address these issues. One-third of companies already offer such training, while one in five will implement it in the near future. Managers highlighted improving professionalism, encouraging respect, and increasing productivity as top reasons for offering etiquette training.
Among companies that currently offer workplace etiquette training, 91% report success, with 19% calling it highly successful and 72% somewhat successful. The most common topics covered in these courses include conflict management, diversity and inclusion, teamwork, and professional communication.
This online poll was commissioned by Intelligent.com and conducted on Pollfish in October 2024. A total of 1,000 U.S. managers completed the survey. Demographic criteria and screening questions were used to ensure qualified respondents. To view the complete report, please visit:
