EAST SETAUKET, N.Y. , Jan. 30, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Completed in December 2024, the new wastewater treatment plant in Mashpee, Massachusetts, will help the community meet environmental guidelines and improve the quality of the town's water resources. , a crystalline waterproofing admixture, was specified to protect the reinforced concrete structures of the plant's treatment tanks from chemical attack.
The town of Mashpee, Massachusetts, on the southwest coast of Cape Cod has around 15,000 inhabitants. It is known both as a summer tourist destination – with many seasonal shops and services – and for its distinctive minority Wampanoag culture. The town is the site of the headquarters of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, who also celebrate modern and traditional activities and crafts with an annual pow-wow.
The construction of a wastewater treatment facility (and a collection system) is the first phase of establishing a sewer system in Mashpee. Treated wastewater will result in much lower nitrogen levels than wastewater from traditional septic systems previously common in the town.
"The new plant now filters and disinfects wastewater from Mashpee homes," explains Richard Farmer, Eastern Region Sales Manager for Penetron USA. "This will go a long way toward helping the water quality rebound in Mashpee's ponds and estuaries."
The $26.7 million project was designed by GHD, the project engineer. Construction consists of a 120,000 GPD average daily flow wastewater treatment facility for primary, secondary and nutrient removal. The main concrete structures included: influent pumping station, preliminary treatment reservoirs with grit removal and fine screens, aeration tanks for MBR treatment, UV disinfection tanks, sludge storage tank, and flow equalization tank.
The durability of concrete structures in wastewater treatment plants depends primarily on protecting the imbedded steel reinforcement from corrosion. Without an adequately durable waterproofing solution, sulfide and chloride attack, cracking, and the overall corrosive environment of the effluent and treatment chemicals can cause rapid concrete deterioration.
Cape Cod Ready Mix, the ready-mix concrete supplier, specified over a competitive crystalline waterproofing admixture originally designated in the project specs.
"In addition to the success of similar projects in the region, considerations of a convenient product packaging, favorable pricing, and immediate availability won the Mashpee project for Penetron," Richard Farmer concluded.
Once added to the concrete mix, PENETRON ADMIX SB-treated concrete is impermeable, stopping water, effluent, sulfates, and other chemicals from entering the concrete, even under the constant exposure to the hydrostatic pressure encountered in a wastewater treatment plant. Its ability to permanently self-heal microcracks prevents moisture and corrosion related damage from occurring over the service life of the concrete.
